I'm Lucy Harold, a Biomedical Science Degree Apprentice at Oxford University Hospitals, working in diagnostic microbiology while studying at the University of Westminster.
I chose a degree apprenticeship because I wanted to combine university study with practical laboratory experience. Since starting in 2023, my apprenticeship has given me opportunities beyond the lab too — including careers outreach and sharing my experience of the apprenticeship route with students.
I created The Healthcare Scientist to make first-hand information about Healthcare Science and degree apprenticeships easier to find, and to give students practical support when they're deciding what to do next.
I'm still on my own apprenticeship journey. That's important to this service: the support is based on current, lived experience rather than pretending there's one perfect route into Healthcare Science.
My apprenticeship journey has taken me from the diagnostic laboratory to careers outreach and wider professional opportunities, including a visit to 10 Downing Street. Experiences like these are part of why I want students to see how many directions an apprenticeship can open up.
In 2026 I was named Higher/Degree Apprentice of the Year and overall Apprentice of the Year at the Oxfordshire Apprenticeship Awards. That recognition strengthened my motivation to share what I've learned with students who may never have considered a degree apprenticeship or a Healthcare Science career.
Some students using The Healthcare Scientist may be under 18, so safeguarding is built into how one-to-one mentoring is delivered.

The Healthcare Scientist collects only information needed to respond to enquiries, provide booked services, process safeguarding consent and administer payments. Application documents may contain personal information; please remove unnecessary details such as your home address, date of birth or other information not relevant to the application.
Application documents are used only to provide the service you purchased and are normally deleted within 30 days after the service is completed. Payment processing is handled by Square under its own privacy arrangements. Information is not sold. You can contact thehealthcarescientist@gmail.com with a privacy question or request.
Services are educational and careers mentoring. They do not guarantee admission, an interview, employment or any other outcome. Application support is feedback on your own work; The Healthcare Scientist will not write an application on your behalf.
For booked appointments, please give at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Subject to your statutory consumer rights, cancellations made at least 24 hours before the appointment are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours and non-attendance may not be refundable where this is fair and lawful in the circumstances.
If you buy a service online, UK consumer cancellation rights may apply. For many distance service contracts there is a 14-day cancellation period. If you ask for a service to begin during that period, different rules can apply once work has started or been fully performed. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law. Parent or guardian consent is required by The Healthcare Scientist for one-to-one mentoring with anyone under 18. Sessions are limited to careers and educational mentoring and use professional communication channels. If a safeguarding concern arises, information may need to be shared with an appropriate person or authority where necessary to protect someone from harm. School-based activity follows the host organisation's safeguarding procedures.
